In Portugal, the federal government has upgraded its proposal for the monthly base salary of public sector workers to €875 in 2025, to comply with an agreement to increase the pay of State sector employees, Portugal Resident reports.

Sebastião Santana - coordinator of the Common Front trade union platform - said the government is maintaining its proposal of €52 with a minimum of 2 per cent for the general update of civil service salaries but has put forward a proposal to increase the salary base by €4.50 compared to the proposal it presented previously, to €875.

The statutory minimum wage is currently €820 and the base salary for public sector workers (the state minimum wage) is €821.83.

Earlier this month, the government proposed that this base salary would increase to €870.50 in 2025. Unions reportedly warned this failed to comply with the agreement to increase State workers’ salaries signed with the previous Socialist government; which provided for increases of around €52 for gross monthly salaries of up to €1,754 and 2 per cent for higher ones.

Under this latest proposal, the increase from €821.83 gross to €875 gross next year represents a rise of €53.17 or 6.47 per cent – slightly above the 6.1 per cent increase set for the statutory minimum wage, according to reporting from Lusa.

These changes are occurring as the question of whether the current government will remain in place following voting at the end of the month on the 2025 State Budget remains. President Marcelo has reportedly said he will dissolve parliament and call new elections if MPs don’t approve the AD coalition’s first budget.
